Match Preview: Southern Kings vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2017-09-15

Leinster will make a small bit of history when they become the first northern hemisphere team to play Pro14 rugby in South Africa. Leinster take on the Kings this Saturday and then the Cheetahs the following Friday. It's fair to say it's been a bit of a baptism by fire for both the South African newcomers so far. The Cheetahs lost to Ulster by 23 points before being hammered 51-18 by Munster last weekend. Similarly, the Kings were hammered 57-10 by the Scarlets, before putting in a slightly better effort only losing to Connacht by 22 points last Saturday.

Leinster got their season off to the best possible start last week with a bonus point win away to the Dragons. It was a bit of a slow start from Leinster but while the Dragons dominated possession early on, they lacked the cutting edge to do much with it. In the second half Leinster's pack took over and from there it was a relatively straightforward win.

Dragons vs Leinster Rugby

So farewell Pro12 and hello to the Pro14!!!

It's been quite a tumultuous summer for the league. Two South African teams discarded by Super Rugby have been re-routed into the league with the Celts and Italians. They've paid their way in to the tune of six million euro a year. Overall the move seems to be a stalking horse for South African teams to get away from their SANZAR partners and get into the more lucrative European club rugby market. These two teams may not be the last South African franchises to make the move.

Well wasn't that an odd game?

Leinster got off to a flyer against Glasgow last week and looked to have the win in the bag. However the strong Glasgow bench inspired a fightback and Glasgow took the lead with ten minutes to go. Leinster steadied the ship and Joey Carbery came on to kick a penalty to put Leinster ahead and then as they defended frantically in the last two minutes...the lights went out! For the first time ever in a Leinster home game in the professional era (it happened away to Dragons years ago) the power failed and we had to wait a nervy twenty minutes before they got the lights back working.

So close, but ultimately too far.

Leinster went out of Europe on their shields last week in Lyon. After an awful start when they trailed by fifteen points, they nearly completed another historic comeback with a fantastic second half display. It would have been interesting to see how Clermont would have reacted if Dan Leavy's try had stood but ultimately it wasn't to be. But you can't gift your opponents a fifteen point start at this level. A couple of things that Leinster got away with against Wasps came back to haunt them. The lineout, which has been dodgy all season at key moments if we're honest, conceded momentum to Clermont early and the lack of genuine pace on the wings was also ruthlessly exposed.
