Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Ulster Rugby

Well that wasn't much fun!

Leinster lost only their second league game of the season to Munster after a chaotic first half of crazy indiscipline. Some Leinster fans sought to blame referee Frank Murphy, but while you could argue he was quite forgiving of some of Munster's retaliation, it could and arguably should have been worse for Leinster. Scott Fardy, Rhys Ruddock and Jack Conan could also have been carded and Tadhg Furlong's yellow really should have been a red if we're honest. For a team with only one yellow card all season, it was a remarkable breakdown in discipline and the players need to put their hands up and take responsibility.

Well that was fun!

In truth Connacht deserved to win that match but it was sweet to snatch it at the death from them in the manner Leinster did. Leinster played poorly for much of the game but when all looked lost they showed the mark of champions again to find a way to win. It was a brilliantly entertaining derby match, in stark contrast to the rather dour encounter between Munster and Ulster the night before. Admittedly the weather was worse but it was a horrible, error ridden affair as a far stronger Ulster team eventually stumbled their way to a win over an under-strength Munster side.

Leinster completed the double over Bath with the minimum of fuss.

Luckily the weather was calm enough in the first half to allow Leinster to build a dominant lead and even if the second half was a scrappy affair in the wind and rain, the job had been done. Leinster now have the group decider against Toulouse to look forward to but before that they have a full round of Christmas derbies, home to Connacht and Ulster with a trip to Munster squeezed in between.

Well it turned out to be a grind alright.

A determined performance from Bath combined with some wet and very windy playing conditions made for a tough assignment for Leinster last week. But though they were far from their best, Leinster found a way to win and they should be much better this week for the tough hit-out.

Leinster resume action in Europe this weekend with a degree of anxiousness.

When they began their European campaign against Wasps it was noticeable how few injuries they had and they put in a masterclass performance. However after the defeat the following week against Toulouse and with the injuries now a lot more numerous the match away to Bath is a more nervy prospect than it might have been.
