Match Preview: Glasgow Warriors v Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2017-10-20

So it's another early Saturday kick-off for the third week running as Leinster travel to Glasgow to take on the Warriors.

In terms of results last week, it was almost perfect for Leinster. They gained a maximum five point haul from their match while in the other pool match there was no bonus points for either side as Exeter beat Glasgow at home. Only the losing bonus point Montpellier earned will rankle with them especially as they really should have closed the game out after they scored the fourth try which gave them their own bonus point.

So it's another early kick-off for the second week running.

The Ballsbridge publicans will be crying into their dishrags as they remember the pre-BT Sports days when Irish teams weren't routinely given the poxiest kick-off spots going. Now the English clubs get all the prime spots and with BT Sports taking over exclusive coverage of the tournament from next season, non-English clubs better get used to the shit end of the stick. Still though the atmosphere will crackle at the RDS like it never does at the Aviva so get there good and early, especially if you're on the terrace.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Munster Rugby

Didn't I say it was going to be a shit-show!

As predicted, last week's game against Edinburgh was a manky, error-strewn display of rugby dross. The rustiness could be forgiven with the "top, top" international players (the ones that wore the red jerseys on that imperialist relic of a tour last summer) returning but once again it was an awful team display with the missed tackle count in the twenties for the third game running. What was less forgivable was the daft decision-making which saw Leinster refuse to take easy points from kicking a penalty even once in a tight game.

Let's just say Leinster won't be in any rush to go back to South Africa anytime soon.

A tour beset by problems from the start ended in a comprehensive defeat to the Cheetahs last Friday. The Cheetahs were worthy winners, powerful up front and quick out wide, but Leinster were very poor. Their defending in particular was appalling.

Leinster got part one of their South African tour done last week with their third bonus point win of the season. It fit the pattern of the season so far, a poor first-half followed by a more clinical second. The Kings were game, especially at the breakdown but Leinster eventually realised their basic tackling was hopeless and powered through for a number of soft tries. The Kings weren't expected to be competitive and the local crowd stayed well away from it. The official attendance was three thousand, but they were lucky if there was five hundred people in the stands of the massive stadium.
