How Irish people pronounce the letter "H", it's as bad as how Americans pronounce "herb"blockhead wrote: ↑January 26th, 2022, 9:32 amSo when you say it "pronounce the H" do you mean it was odd that we actually pronounced it? Unlike say, Londoners, who have dropped it completly.RoboProp wrote: ↑January 26th, 2022, 9:17 amThe one that used my eyebrow was Joe Schmidt frequently being called Smith by commentators and by folks in general; and then the way Joe himself would pronounce Samoa (Sam-wa), which I think is closer to the Samoan pronunciation.leinsterforever wrote: ↑January 25th, 2022, 10:20 pm Some Irish people (probably others too, but I don't have as much experience with them) just seem to have a mental block when it comes to pronouncing unfamiliar names and words. There was an Anglo-Irish guy around where I live called Ronaldson, and a lot of people called him "Rollandson". Another thing was I had a lecturer in college called Raftery. Even though that's an Irish name some people still called him "Rafferty". O'Gara calls Vakatawa "Vatakawa". Any number of people spelt Te'o "T'eo". Even BOD, instead of pronouncing it "Nathaywa", calls Isa "Nasseewa". Not everyone is a linguist.
Lots of commentators seem to be calling him Ala Alatoa, as if it's two different words. Surely the apostrophe should be more a glottal stop than a complete pause before a new word.
Ones I found odd when I moved here all those many moons ago was how Irish people pronounce "H" and film.

A couple of times recently I was talking about Tonga and pronounced it Tonga rather than Tong-Gah as most people who follow rugby would know to do and was met with blank incomprehension.

gotta love this forum.....we sign a fella with over a third of the letters in his name(s) spelt using the letter "a" and having discussed his rugby abilities and come to apparent agreement that he is a useful player to have on the roster, we divert to a discussion that effectively revolves around how many of the "a"s are silent (or not), and the appropriate ways of saying his name....! [phonetic possibilities including ah; aw; & ay/ai]

When he scored his try against Montpellier Leinster tweeted #BigMike so maybe that’s what we should go with?

Let’s say that the setpiece is contested a bit more fairly (in Super Rugby), whereas over here you need to be on your game every scrum and every lineout.”

Re: Michael Ala'alatoa
Players don't get to pick fan nicknames.
Big Mike
Big Vahk ( better when you say it out loud)
Big Tom
All good. Wouldn't feel right for Furlong.

Re: Michael Ala'alatoa
Glasgow fans are the Kings of this, they have a nickname for every player in their squad and some a very creative. They will even only use the nicknames when sharing team announcements on forums, the majority of the time I don't know who they are talking about.
