Re: US Presidential Election 2024
Take any group of 100 people in the US, whether they live in the country, a village, a town or a city, and all 100 are impacted by inflation and the cost of living. Among the same 100, the question of the right of a women an abortion may impact as few as 5 or even 10 of them
Harris's campaign focus was too narrow and her message too sensitive or removed from the normal lives of the vast majority.
As Reagan said all those years ago "IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID".
in the US, that message rarely changes at Election time.

He's surrounded by a team of enablers this time, unlike 2016. An appalling outcome.Dave Cahill wrote: ↑November 6th, 2024, 1:19 pm To appropriate a Stewart Lee joke
It wasn't just racists that voted for Trump. c**ts did as well.

Yeah and they had a decent message that they didn't stick the landing with. Orthodoxy (and opposition republicans) wanted to trigger a rise in unemployment (doubling at least) to rein in inflation. But Biden got it back down just as quickly anyway with less pain. Steady hands really did actually deliver.Ruckedtobits wrote: ↑November 6th, 2024, 6:38 pm Take any group of 100 people in the US, whether they live in the country, a village, a town or a city, and all 100 are impacted by inflation and the cost of living. Tariffs are taxes that increase prices. Trump's policies were always going to be worse. Less pain is a hard sell, but it can be done, it was done wrong.
But that's still trivial compared to the obscene deficiencies of the other side.
Re: US Presidential Election 2024
Some food for thought.
The 2020 Presidential Election Result.
Biden 81,284,666 votes
Trump 74,224,319 votes
The 2024Presidential Election Result (1 result still outstanding.)
Harris 70,374,301 votes
Trump 74,304,377 votes
A comparison shows very little change in Trump's vote.
Whereas there is almost 11m votes in the difference between the Biden and Harris votes.

Re: US Presidential Election 2024
Interesting. Kinda fits with what I feared. Dems ate themselves. Republican vote held together through everything.
There are about 5 millions votes still to count so Trump did increase his vote. It's possible to see it exclusively as a turnout issue for Harris voters or as turnout being lower for both and a movement to Trump.
There'd need to be closer analysis for that (may have been done already, I don't know).

Exit polling showed that the economy just trumped (to coin a phrase) concern for democracy by 34% to 31%. In part Trump got economic kudos from the electorate because he got the benefit of the economy he inherited from Obama. His real abilities as a manager were revealed by his atrocious mismanagement of the pandemic and earlier in his career when at the height of the booming 2nd term Clinton economy he went bankrupt while owning three casinos! The next four years are going to be rough. The man is a degenerate and a vile creature. He’s a racist and an enthusiastic sexual predator as well as a traitor to the US Constitution. There are no depths to which he will not plunge.

I remember a few years ago when Bill Clinton was president, having a descussion with a Republican supporter.JohnB wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 9:49 pm Exit polling showed that the economy just trumped (to coin a phrase) concern for democracy by 34% to 31%. No matter what I said to him about the merits of Clinton's presidency he wasn't having it. It really didn't matter what I said and eventually that penny finally drop.
My final comment to him was - I don't suppose you'd even give him credit for being in the right place at the right time.

It truly defies belief, after all the rambling "they're eating the dogs" speeches, court cases, bankruptcy's, incompetency during covid and the pussy grabbing family values of henry VIII, Americans decided, "yep, he's who I want to be in charge of the nuclear launch codes and our country".
America wasn't ready for a woman (or a woman of colour) to be president?
From an Irish perspective, I notice Robert Kennedy Jr. is fierce friendly with trump. The Kennedys were always friends of Ireland and I doubt one would let Trump ride roughshod over us to get something. Which might bode well for Norn Iron too. Joe Kennedy was doing a great job as unofficial US envoy and champion of reunification.

In 2016 Hilary Clinton won the popular vote by more than 2.8 million votes, the third-most votes of any candidate in history. Lost the election due to the electoral system.
So it not a gender thing.
We've had a mixed race President before (2 terms)
So its not a race thing.
Maybe Harris just wasn't a very good candidate.
Like most countries, even more so in the US, the vast majority of the voters will vote on party grounds. The battle is for those few % of floating voters, who it seems, and I will never understand this, voted for Trump.
You know I'm going to lose,

Some of Trump's appeal is related to the level of Corporation Tax this country collects. Americans aren't happy about it and
Trump promised he's going to do something about it.
The strange thing s that our Corp Tax take has ballooned since we were "forced" to increase the rate from 12,5% to 15%. It's a 20% increase on the 12.5% rate but our take seems to have gone up by a lot more than 20%.

I don't think Trump can do much about the corp tax situation.
The main reasons the big corps are in Ireland is for:
(1) Invoicing EU customers
(2) Attractive Corp tax rates.
i.e. they are here not just the corp tax break.
Post brexit, our well educated, english-speaking workforce & membership of the EU increases our value, geopolitically.
And Ireland agreeing to the new EUs Corp tax harmonisation rules which means there's nowhere else in the EU to move for favourable corp tax rates
As an aside, I visit London (City) for work and it rankles large how good we were at globalisation amongst the english. they are fierce jealous.

I believe a lot of the 'concern of democracy' respondents in polls were Republicans who from their viewpoint were concerned about an election being stolen.
RFK a bit of a pariah within the Kennedy clan. Probably need to bring the snakes back to Ireland to gain his interest, give his long time fascination with exotic animals.

Re: US Presidential Election 2024
allegedly musk is inviting himself to every meeting and call now. press are reporting he had a major blow out with trumps legal advisor in front of everyone at dinner in florida.
It sounds like it's beginning to unravel between them.
meanwhile, twitter is guestimated to be worth USD$8billion ( $12b this time last year) now after he bought it for $44billion...using other people's money. revenue is below $180m p.a. and the interest on repayments an estimated $1billon p.a.
I guess he will sell tesla shares.
this election reminds me so much of the brexit vote in britain. it was so obvious it was going to be a train wreck, yet, people still voted for it.
