The delayed 2021 Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Junior Cup will get underway with three double-headers scheduled for Energia Park.

With some schools opting not to take part in the competition, there is a smaller pool of 14 schools taking part in the competition starting on Monday.

The luck of the draw means Castleknock College and Cistercian College Roscrea receive a bye to the second round.

St Mary’s College v Blackrock College – Monday, 27 September (2pm)

Blackrock will begin the pursuit of their 53rd Junior Cup against crosstown rivals St Mary’s in what is a mouth-watering tie.

The domination of the Williamstown school is reflected in nine appearances in the last 10 finals, winning six and sharing the 2020 version with Newbridge.

Jack Angulo will captain from the back row in what is certain to be a highly competitive bunch, carrying the tag of favourites.

St Mary’s started out the season by putting one over on Terenure in one of the fiercest traditional derbies in Dublin.

Coach Jamie Cornett knows it would be extremely naive to take too much away from what has gone on before meeting with ‘Rock.

The back row is a superior unit with openside Cillian Jacobs and No 8 Aaron O’Brien bringing vital game day experience from last year.

In fact, there is a core of know-how running through the spine, centre Evan Moynihan, the captain, out-half Gavin Foley and wing Sean Murray-Norton all in their second season.

Catholic University School v Terenure College – Monday, 27 September (4pm)

In the second match on Monday, Catholic University School will take a shot at Terenure in what could be a challenging match-up.

CUS have shown progress following losses to Gonzaga and CBC Monkstown with a confidence-boosting win over Pres Bray last time out.

Cathal Lynch runs the lineout and captain Ruben Maguire carries strongly from No 8.

There is experience in the back division as out-half Niall Cox and full-back Sean Turner return from last year.

Terenure recovered from a 19-10 defeat to St Mary’s to post victories over St Gerard’s (34-5) and CBC Cork (26-7) in the lead up to this point.

Hooker Mark Egan, prop Olan Storey and second row Eamon Geraghty should be able to bring the physicality coach Sean Skehan is looking for, having played last year.

The back row of Lochlann Wardick, Hugh Weber and Daniel McCarthy is effective on both sides of the ball.

Half-backs Elliott Mallen and Casper Gabriel will look to keep their pack moving forward and centre Daniel Martin should pose a threat through the middle.

Belvedere College v Kilkenny College – Tuesday, 28 September (2pm)

Belvedere College will be guided by an able body of coaches, led by Noel McKenna and Andy Wood, who should have them on point to meet Kilkenny.

Captain Finn Byrne will provide leadership through the midfield, outside smart half-backs Ciaran Bateman and Matthew Doyle.

The forward pack will look to uphold the well-trodden traditions of the Great Denmark Street school, beginning with the front row fundamentals of Eoin McDermott, Harry Kelly and Cormac Pearse.

There is a lot to like about the scavenging instincts of flankers Luke Fitzgerald and Karl Russell as well as the drive of No 8 Alex Usanov.

The sure hands of Jeff Carter, the former Leinster Schools coach, have been deployed at this level to have Kilkenny at their best.

Scrum half Daniel Benn and second row Patrick Bramley provide vital experience from the last campaign in which they lost 17-13 to Terenure in the first round.

Captain Adam Watchorn is not one to take a backward step as the Marble city kids prepare to cause an upset.

Gonzaga College v St Gerard’s School – Tuesday, 28 September (4pm)

Gonzaga have been able to work in three matches to be in prime physical condition ahead of their first round clash with St Gerard’s.

The mere fact they have been playing has been used as a positive by their coach George Naoupu, the former Connacht No 8.

The upswing in ‘Zaga’s fortunes in recent years is not just a coincidence. There has been a dedicated approach to lifting the standards of rugby at the school, leading to their appearance in the 2019 Senior Cup final.

Forward Patrick McEnroe will lead the way for a school hoping to build on their previous final appearances at this level in 1989, 2003 and 2006.

Flanker Matthew Cahill-Azijn has earned the right to captain St Gerard’s because of his composure under pressure.

Elsewhere in the pack, lineout leaper William Van Der Hoeven is also a strong ball carrier and the theme of hard work is kept going by the likes of Eoghan McCaul, Henry Doyle and Cian Geraghty.

Out-half Ciaran Foley is a fine playmaker, honing the skills to kick with both feet and pass off either side, alongside his accurate goal-kicking.

The back three of Ross McCrea, Robert Williams and Harry Alderton is a well-connected unit as solid at the back as they are dangerous in attack.

CBC Monkstown Park v Wesley College – Wednesday, 29 September (2pm)

CBC Monkstown have won three of their four matches, beating Pres Bray, Gonzaga and CUS, to take a fair degree of confidence into their clash with Wesley.

Their captain Charlie Meagher is one of those do-it-all loose forwards mixing up dynamic carrying with a natural nose for a turnover at the ruck.

Centre Milo Quinn is a shutdown defender in the middle of the back division with the skills to handle and distribute to the back three.

Wesley have shown coaches Adam Curry and Andrew Egan an upward trend in performance from losing out to St Mary’s to drawing with St Gerard’s in their two matches to date.

Captain Rian Handley will look to set the tone with his mastery of the basics at hooker. Flanker Milo Campbell is an athletic option at the lineout.

A solid platform in the scrum will be used to put No 8 Ed Collins on the ball as a gainline-breaking carrier.

The backline is not without its virtues, spearheaded by the bowling ball running of centre Ferdia Spain.

Newbridge College v Presentation College, Bray – Wednesday, 29 September (4pm)

Coach Dave Brew will draw on the experience of four players involved in Newbridge’s march to the 2020 Junior Cup final that was never played.

Undoubtedly, Ruairi Munnelly will be a central character as a returning second row starter, expected to lead from the front.

Indeed, there should be plenty of ballast in the front row as prop Shane Davitt is also back to throw his weight behind the Bridge’s strategy.

The Kildare school has played two pre-season matches, beating Ard Scoil Ris in Limerick and drawing with a North Midlands U-17 side.

Pres captain James Healy has the ball skills to have played minor football for Wicklow this summer.

The No 8 is a strong leader for what is a squad light on experience, coming out on the wrong side of the score against CBC Monkstown, St Mary’s and CUS in pre-Cup hit outs.

Alkan Dal and Eoin Khan are two capable front-rowers, who do not have to be asked twice to take the ball up.

There is a nice blend in the midfield between broken field runner James McDonald and the big ball-carrying presence of Dan Seymour.

Blackrock are favorites with Michaels not playing, would be great if Nure made the final.

Those semi-finalists could have been pairs from any of the past seven decades - well maybe five of the seven for Castleknock.
