Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Munster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2021-03-26

Shoehorned in the weekend between the end of the Six Nations and the resumption of the European Champions Cup, the Grand Final doesn't feel all that grand this season if truth be told.

The premature end to the league season is of course to allow space to play the Rainbow Cup with the four big South African teams coming into the fold. They've finally announced some fixtures for that today as it appeared the whole tournament could be in danger of not happening. No European teams will be travelling to South Africa though so you wonder how fair it is but we'll see.

A young Leinster side did the job away to Zebre last week.

Now there's just one more game to play before the final against Munster in the RDS next Saturday the 27th. The following Friday from that they will take on Toulon in the Heineken Champions Cup, so it's a pretty intense period coming up.

After something of a bizarre win over Ulster last week, Leinster earned their place in a fourth Grand Final on the trot.

After beating the Scarlets, Glasgow and Ulster in the last three seasons, this time they'll finally meet Munster with a trophy at stake for the first time since the 2011 Pro12 final. Of course Munster won that day in Thomond Park but that was the last silverware Munster got their hands on.

It's the big one, the winner-takes-all match to determine who tops group A and takes their place in the final!!!!

That is the line the poor souls at the Pro Rugby PR department were desperate to be writing this week. Unfortunately Ulster's failure to get a four try bonus point in both of their last two games has opened up a six point lead for Leinster.

Leinster won a tougher than expected game last week against the Dragons to go five points clear at the top of Pool B.

The Dragons were game from the start and Leinster's discipline was poor as they handed the Dragons too many easy points. Every time the vastly superior Leinster pack got rumbling though, they eventually got over for a try. But the Dragons kept them honest and it was no bad thing to have a decently competitive game instead of another handy blowout.
